Study Reviews Community-Centric Translation Methodology
Jul 23, 2025
AvodahConnect commissioned expert translator to review its approach
Communities around the world strive to retain their cultural identity. Limited by lack of educational materials, high costs, and the challenges of traditional translation models, people in these overlooked communities often struggle to preserve their language.
AvodahConnect’s AI-assisted translation empowers communities and reshapes their stories. To dig deeper into the organization’s approach, partnerships, and technology, AvodahConnect commissioned Dr. Gilles Gravelle, a respected translation consultant with decades of experience and a PhD in linguistics.
In a new white paper, Dr. Gravelle describes how community-centric translation is a faster, more cost-effective method of preserving low-resource languages.
Community-based translation saves costs and time
Cost and time are two barriers that keep communities from translating more resources into their own languages. AvodahConnect reduces both costs and time by using the Bible to begin every community-centric translation project.
Seven times longer than the average novel, the Bible is full of rich stories, themes, and emotions, all shared through the use of a massive vocabulary. At over 783,000 words, its length, breadth, and global availability make it an effective foundation for underserved communities’ translation efforts.
AvodahConnect’s unique combination of technology, local expertise, and common purpose centers the community and creates unity.
Shared priorities guide translation processes
Dr. Gravelle’s review reveals AvodahConnect’s community-centric practices. While AI-supported translation is a technical endeavor, at AvodahConnect, it’s rooted in connection and collaboration.
In the white paper, he describes how the organization emphasizes:
Human-centered technology
Prioritizing lasting connections over automation, AvodahConnect strives for collaboration. The AvodahConnect team works with local people to design processes that encourage community-led ownership of the Bible translation projects.
Deep partnerships
AvodahConnect partners with local organizations and defines clear roles for their contributors, plus AI developers and translators. People from the community drive the translation effort.
Iterative translation workflows
Translators collect data, edit AI-generated drafts, and undergo peer reviews and quality assurance cycles. These processes foster continuous learning that yields high-quality translation and builds local translation capacity.
Throughout their translation projects, local people do more than participate — they run the processes that preserve their language. AvodahConnect’s approach draws people into the work, bridging the gap between technology and humans and helping everyone feel invested in their community’s success.
Technology excels at translating low-resource languages
Analyzing the methodology, Dr. Gravelle found that AvodahConnect uses small language models (SLMs). An SLM learns from a small number of written materials, paying special attention to unique words, grammar, and style in the language.
This narrower method is highly effective for low-resource languages because the SLM trains on specific, curated material. Using the Bible as training material gives SLMs a wide range of vocabulary, grammar, and narratives from a culturally significant text.
When combined with AvodahConnect’s years of iteration, review, and community validation, translations become faster, more cost-effective, and of higher quality.
Expert evaluation highlights process and partnership
Dr. Gravelle conducted an in-depth study of AvodahConnect’s translation model and community partnerships. His white paper explains how community-led, AI-assisted Bible translation ensures high quality and contextual relevancy.

Understanding the Bible Through AI: A Data-Driven Approach to Thematic Similarity
Apr 14, 2025
“What if the Bible could be explored not only by chapter and verse, but also by theme, style, and emotional resonance—across languages?”
Understanding themes can be a powerful tool for translators, scholars, and communities working to make Scripture come alive in their heart language. Our latest white paper: Understanding the Bible Through AI: A Data-Driven Approach to Thematic Similarity, takes another step in our goal to harness the power of technology to illuminate timeless truths.
This pioneering research presents an experimental method for clustering the books of the Bible—not based on tradition, chronology, or authorship, but purely on the themes embedded within the text itself. Using a Siamese model architecture, we’ve trained language models on three translations (English NIV, French Segond, and Indonesian AYT) to explore semantic similarity across Scripture.
Why does this matter?
Themes carry cultural nuance, emotional tone, and spiritual insight. And when we can recognize them computationally, we open new pathways for contextual translation and deeper comprehension.
What’s Inside the White Paper:
A new methodology for comparing Bible verses using AI-powered semantic clustering
Clustering results that align with—but also challenge—traditional groupings of biblical books
Multi-language validation showing how core themes transcend translation
New directions for translation projects in rare and under-resourced languages
Whether you're a Bible translator, linguist, AI enthusiast, or simply someone passionate about Scripture engagement, this white paper offers a fascinating look at how machine learning can serve the enduring mission of making God’s Word accessible and meaningful in every language.

The Future is Now: AI's Impact on Healthcare Delivery and Patient Experience
Aug 22, 2023
AI plays a crucial role in the transformation of healthcare now and in the future. The possibilities of AI are endless with a potential to improve patient outcomes
With the popularity of and skepticism about large language models (LLM) and other AI tools, hype about AI continues to increase. In good news, the hype is worth it – AI holds substantial value to various economic sectors, including healthcare. There is a clear paradigm shift toward using AI-powered technology to improve processes and outcomes.
For many, the excitement around AI is due to its potential to reduce administrative stress and achieve greater productivity. Executives, leaders, and medical professionals are embracing the new dawn of artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, big data, and other technological advancements. This latest cycle is referred to as the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0).
As these emerging technologies become increasingly popular, the healthcare industry is not left behind. Many medical providers are curious about how they can engage with and reap the benefits of artificial intelligence. Whether it's conversational AI, predictive analytics, machine learning, or physical robots, AI is dramatically reshaping patient and provider experiences and the methods providers use to deliver care.
The pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in the healthcare industry, making digital health technologies like telehealth, telemedicine, and virtual consultation crucial for the delivery of healthcare services. This catalyzed a digital transformation in areas such as diagnosis and patient experience. Since then, AI has grown increasingly popular, leading many health providers and hospitals to believe healthcare will heavily incorporate AI.
Understanding AI in healthcare
In healthcare, AI is an umbrella term that defines how human-related technology applications, such as machine learning, natural language processing, and cognitive technologies, can be applied. AI improves health outcomes by analyzing large amounts of data quickly and predicting accurate results and treatment plans. Besides its numerous medical benefits, AI is directly addressing some long-standing challenges faced by doctors and nurses.
Prior to the pandemic, approximately 50% of doctors and nurses reported experiencing burnout, stress, and anxiety due to high administrative workloads. These are precisely the challenges that advanced AI technology aims to address. By transforming healthcare providers' workflows using tools like conversational AI, processes such as repetitive admin tasks and Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan (SOAP) note-taking become automated. In this setup, doctors and nurses do not have to worry about remembering every word a patient says during a visit. Instead, they can focus more on caring for and listening to patients while AI handles the transcription. Specifically, healthcare AI tools like AvodahMed’s Nsight are tackling the problem of administrative workload and burnout to enhance workflow efficiency.
AI in the global market is forecasted to reach $48.77 billion by 2027. This represents an estimated CAGR growth rate of 49% from 2022 to 2027. This surge reflects the transformative impact AI is already having on healthcare outcomes, from refining treatment techniques and analyzing complex data, to assisting providers with diagnoses. The benefits of AI adoption will not be limited to doctors and other healthcare providers. It promises to enhance quality of life more broadly, improving preventive care and yielding better patient outcomes.
Why apply AI in healthcare
AI can be applied in numerous ways in healthcare including simplifying workflow, automating patient prescription refills, and enhancing radiology treatments — the list is endless. Leveraging AI in healthcare will help many healthcare professionals improve their practice, patient outcomes, and save 5% to 10% every year. In addition, AI will be beneficial for health organizations that are financially constrained while improving patient experiences.
Health systems can take advantage of AI in the following ways:
Real-time patient data
Moving away from the traditional method of waiting for patient data, one benefit of AI is that health organizations can use this advanced technology for faster diagnosis and accurate information analysis. This, in turn, is increasing decision-making speed and aiding the optimization of clinical data. With AI in use, there is a better relationship between physicians and patients, as patients will have shorter wait times for medical outcomes and can receive their results instantly. In addition, the doctor can look directly at the patient versus the computer during the visit, enhancing communication and relationships. This improved data analysis will enable providers to recommend preventive measures to patients, leading to increased cost savings. Machine learning systems can identify patterns and trends that can provide the best treatment plan for patients.
Reducing administrative stress & enhancing workflow
The administrative burden in healthcare affects employee satisfaction and reduces their motivation to do the work they love. The constant repetition of tasks drains their time and energy. Even with the use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), physicians still experience burnout and spend a lot of time on administrative tasks. On average, doctors spend 16.6% of their weekly working hours on administrative tasks. Using AI can reduce this time significantly. For instance, instead of focusing on note-taking, AI, with the use of natural language processing (NLP), can transcribe patient encounters in real time.
In addition, AI can automate tasks and simplify clinical documentation. From refilling prescriptions to scheduling appointments and billing, clinicians can have more time by letting AI handle routine tasks.
Cost savings
The automation of operations and processes helps medical providers diagnose conditions they may have otherwise missed and recommend preventive care or treatment plans early on. This will accelerate revenue generation for many medical organizations. Consider the case where a primary care doctor who used Nsight during 52 appointments identified 11 opportunities for Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and added $13,000 in revenue – in just two weeks. Nsight listened for a core set of patient complaints to recommend certain patients for treatment.

How Artificial Intelligence Is Shaping the Healthcare Industry to Improve Patient Care Delivery
Jun 22, 2023
Artificial intelligence (AI) has grown rapidly in various sectors of the economy and society over the last few years. The buzz about ChatGPT, an advanced intelligence chatbot developed by Open AI, has contributed to the incorporation of AI in more business models. A recent report by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and AnsibleHealth reveals that ChatGPT passed the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE). Impressively, it achieved an accuracy score of 60% without assistance from clinical trainers.
AI is changing the healthcare system in myriad ways. Specifically, its adoption could lead to the US healthcare sector saving an estimated $200 billion to $360 billion in spending annually within the next five years. Beyond cost savings, the advantages of AI extends to enhanced quality healthcare delivery, greater access to care, and improved physician satisfaction.
AI can analyze large amounts of clinical data and identify trends and disease markers. It can predict outcomes from electronic health records (EHRs) and transcribe patient encounters in real-time.
The use of AI in healthcare is transforming patient experience, improving administrative processes, and enhancing physicians' productivity. It is projected that AI can reduce the time physicians spend working on administrative tasks, so they can spend 17% more time with their patients. Artificial intelligence has great potential to help medical professionals improve the health of their practices, gather valuable information, and make better decisions.
The benefits of AI in healthcare can improve the health system for both patients and physicians. In this article, we describe the different components within AI and their benefits in healthcare.
The Different Components of Artificial Intelligence In Healthcare
AI technology uses data to perform human-like tasks and make informed decisions. It encompasses a diverse collection of tools. Depending on their specific functions, these tools can perform a variety of different tasks. Here are some of the different components of artificial intelligence in healthcare:
Machine Learning
Machine learning (ML) is one of the common forms of artificial intelligence. It analyzes vast amounts of clinical data to accurately predict outcomes for medical diagnosis and treatment. The Machine learning algorithms can identify patterns, analyze medical imaging and classify patients. As the ML model analyzes more data, the model learns, improving the quality of the results produced.
Two important elements of machine learning - neural networks and deep learning - have been instrumental in healthcare advancements. Both can be used in various ways, such as predicting disease likelihood by evaluating problems and assessing variables, assisting in medical detection through image data analysis, and enhancing speech recognition. Notably, deep learning, which involves more complex, layered neural networks, can often provide more nuanced analysis and predictions.
The use of artificial intelligence technology like machine learning can help medical professionals with disease diagnosis and the prescription of the right treatment to suit patients needs. Most AI technology in healthcare utilizes clinical data and medical images, employing machine learning and precision medicine to accurately predict outcomes. This process is called supervised learning. For unsupervised learning, unstructured data such as text and images are used to uncover hidden patterns.
Natural Language Processing
One of the goals of AI is to make sense of human speech and language. The Natural language processing (NLP) algorithm can reveal important clinical information from medical records. Specifically, NLP helps with speech recognition, saving medical professionals time from manually inputting clinical notes into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) and classifying data to enable smooth interpretation of information and extracting insights. Clinicians use NLP to improve patient care by streamlining processes, enhancing diagnoses, and customizing services for patients.
Physical Robots
Physical robots are well-known in the medical field. From delivering hospital supplies to performing tasks and assisting in operating theaters, physical robots have evolved over time to become more intelligent, advancing healthcare practices. Since 2000, surgical robots have played a role in operating rooms, providing surgeons with improved visibility, precise incisions, wound stitching, and more. Some of the surgical procedures that use robotic assistance include prostate surgery and head and neck surgery. In most cases, robots collaborate with humans to perform specific tasks.
Robotic Process Automation
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) AI was primarily developed for administrative purposes such as keeping patient records updated, authorizing records early on, automating billing, and extracting data. Contrary to the name, RPA does not involve physical robots but relies on computer programs on servers. These programs perform tasks according to a set of business rules. RPA technology, unlike other types in healthcare, is cost-effective and helps with repetitive tasks, thus saving clinicians valuable time.
Benefits of Artificial Intelligence In Healthcare
Early Detection
AI technology has the potential to accurately detect malignant tumors, cancer, and other diseases early on, before they severely affect the patient's life. The use of AI for population screening enhances medical prediction capabilities, leading to significant reductions in disease progression. For instance, in the case of cancer, AI has improved detection rates, achieving results 30 times faster with 99% accuracy. This advancement reduces the need for invasive procedures like biopsies.
Enhanced Patient Experience
AI technology can significantly enhance the patient experience, enabling medical professionals to gain insights more quickly. By leveraging vast data sets, clinicians can streamline the medical process, thereby improving workflow efficiency for both patients and physicians.
Similarly, the increased use of AI to facilitate communication between physicians and patients can greatly enhance patient experience. A study reveals that 83% of patients believe poor communication significantly affects their experience. However, by using AI to gather patient data and reports, as well as improve accessibility, the patient experience can be greatly improved. For instance, AvodahMed's Nsight, an AI conversational platform, aids physicians in communicating more effectively with their patients. The experience is akin to a physical interaction, making it easier and more efficient for both the patients and doctors.
Medical Treatment
The benefits of AI in healthcare goes beyond early detection and diagnosis, and include assisting patients in managing their treatment by utilizing comprehensive plans. AI's ability to process large datasets yields rapid interpretation of patients' needs, reducing the time clinicians would typically spend analyzing information. According to Forbes, the use of AI has improved diagnosis, treatment, and advanced image scanning. An AI algorithm developed by MIT can analyze 3D scans up to 1,000 times faster than existing review systems.
The fast detection of patterns and trends can help curtail the outbreak of transmissible diseases such as COVID-19, with intelligent platforms capable of tracking similar symptoms. Overall, by analyzing a patient's medical records, AI can determine the best treatment plan for that patient and assist the physicians in proffering a tailored treatment.
Automate Administrative Tasks & Routines
A study by Annals of Internal Medicine showed that doctors spend 27% of their time with patients and 49.2% on administrative tasks. The utilization of AI can enhance doctors' productivity by automating routine tasks such as medical documentation, appointment scheduling, billing, and medication pick-up notifications. The excessive time spent on administrative tasks detracts from quality time with patients. To improve the medical practice experience for both patients and doctors, Avodah Nsight assists physicians by automating administrative tasks. It reduces the time spent on medical documentation with features like auto-charting, summarizing, and live auto transcription.
Increased Accessibility to Healthcare
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a surge in the use of virtual visits and telehealth services. AI-powered virtual care allows patients to have medical consultations with their doctors from the comfort of their homes, reducing inconvenience and travel time. This is particularly beneficial for patients who have difficulty commuting. From symptom checks to pre-screening, intake forms, and other information, AI can help streamline the process, seamlessly transmitting information between parties online. Medical professionals using AvodahMed Nsight can offer their patients both on-demand and scheduled virtual visits, thereby improving patient experience and ensuring healthcare accessibility on the go.
The benefits of AI in healthcare are numerous and can advance medical practice in various ways. Innovative Solutions Yield Greater Gains Through Technology Ethics
Mar 9, 2023
We can drive healthcare technology progress responsibly
by Devin White, AvodahMed Chief Technology Officer
It's easy to understand why many physicians are wary about adopting new technology. After all, it can be hard to envision the total impact to a practice.
Here’s an example. Moving from paper-based record keeping to electronic health records (EHRs) brought sweeping efficiency improvements. At the same time, it also placed a higher burden on physicians to learn and use the EHR systems. Now, physicians often blame time-consuming, cumbersome EHR documentation tasks as contributors to burnout.
Healthcare advances raise ethical concerns
As a technologist, I’m passionate about technology ethics — how we use ethical principles to address the practical implications of technology. Advancements in technology provide ever-greater capabilities that require us to make decisions and provide better support for people who use our solutions.
When evaluating how best to deliver value to physicians and staff, we must consider the ethical impacts. In creating significant efficiencies, we must also aim to:
prevent workload burden
reduce physician burnout
overcome weighted bias or discrimination
ensure patient accessibility
prioritize privacy
We can achieve those goals and more with our standard technologies and advanced ones, such as machine learning (ML). When viewed through an ethical lens, these next-level options enable technologists in healthcare to solve clinical, operational, and business problems in innovative ways.
Auto transcription accelerates data, reduces costs
Also known as automatic speech recognition (ASR), auto transcription is an excellent example of the innovation that artificial intelligence (AI) brings to the industry. Auto transcription empowers providers to process live or recorded conversations and automatically transcribe them into text.
Since computers can interpret and process speech much faster than humans, this approach removes any gaps in conversation — gaps that you’d find when a human scribe technician transcribes manually. Medical practices of all sizes can save time and reduce costs associated with human transcribers, improve the quality of patient records, and accelerate their data capture.
Physicians often keep solutions like auto transcription at arm's length because they perceive the systems will increase time and expense for their practices — but that could be a costly mistake. Auto transcription can bring leapfrog gains to any practice, including in speed, cost, and quality.
Transcription and translation demonstrate proven ROI in healthcare. As we develop solutions that deliver those services, often we can achieve greater, faster ROI by incorporating AI.
However, while AI and ML propel us in the right direction, these technologies on their own are not the answer. We have a responsibility to build problem-solving software in an ethical way — for example, by removing bias — and we can’t overlook ethical concerns in favor of automating workflow, saving time, or reducing costs.

What It Really Means to Be Seen, Known, and Understood
Dec 2, 2022
Why the medical community needs to take more action - By Craig Radford, Senior Vice President, AvodahMed
One of our most basic needs is to feel seen, known, and understood.
The slight take on this famous quote by Dr. Ralph Nichols, known as the “father of the field of listening,” takes on new meaning in today’s pandemic-affected world. In rebuilding our social and work cultures, we have a new appreciation of authentic human connection truly being the cornerstone of well-being.
Unfortunately, patients with disabilities and those in marginalized communities face immediate barriers to human connection, enduring long-standing discrimination and lack of acceptance. They are involuntarily part of a rising population that continues to be underserved and underrepresented ─ especially in healthcare.
This is especially dramatic for the 1.5 billion people globally who live with hearing loss, a number that could rise to 2.5 billion by 2050, according to the World Health Organization. Against this backdrop, a Deaf person interacting with America’s fragmented and overstressed healthcare system faces overwhelming challenges. Top issues include inadequate access to healthcare, lack of health knowledge, and limited educational materials provided in sign language, all contributing to communication barriers and the risk of further marginalization.
Four tiers to help providers achieve the best possible healthcare experience for underserved patients
Medical leaders can institute the following four tiers across their organizations to help alleviate many of the health disparities experienced by individuals. As a member of the Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) community, I can vouch from personal experience that this work must be done for all marginalized people.
Compliance. Healthcare organizations must demonstrate an effective compliance program ensuring regulations are met that mandate diversity, equity, and inclusion of individuals, including patients and those in the workforce. Just checking off boxes as a bare minimum to be legally compliant is not good enough.
Accessibility. Although the health reform movement brought about positive changes, plenty more is still needed. Regardless of the patient’s disability, ethnicity and language, providers must support every patient’s accessibility to affordable and convenient healthcare beyond obligatory basic information.
Inclusivity. A hot topic these days, healthcare organizations must offer equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized. As a Deaf person, I understand this all too well from my own accessibility needs: my desire is to communicate with any individual and thrive in any type of environment.
Sense of belonging and being understood. For the most part, I do feel that I am seen and heard when visiting the doctor. But my sense of connection is strengthened if paired with a sense of belonging and a feeling of being understood. My community is indeed becoming “known” and “heard” in healthcare, but we still have a ways to go. Many providers have yet to commit 100% to create a culture where the DHH and other types of marginalized populations are fully understood in a societal sense of true belonging. Making sure there is a seat at the table for everyone requires work.
More about No. 4: Sense of belonging and being understood
Vernā Myers, vice president of inclusion strategy for Netflix, is credited with voicing the quote: “Diversity is being invited to the party, inclusion is being asked to dance.” Her point is beautifully stated. But what is missing, I believe, is the recognition that there is a difference between being asked to dance and actually knowing the song and dance.
The same could be said from the Deaf patient’s perspective. Inclusion, in this sense, means showing up to a doctor’s appointment where an American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter is provided ─ considered the bare minimum of accessibility required to meet compliance ─ and that’s it.
Within the Deaf population, there’s also a subset of people who share a distinct Deaf culture. Being Deaf is unique because it includes both a unique culture and a language. United (within the U.S.) by their primary use of ASL, they identify as a linguistic minority. As a result of this diversity, it’s often challenging for organizations, including the medical community, to meaningfully engage with Deaf patients.
This “sense of belonging and being understood” tier also points to what is not being done in healthcare: actively looking through the lens of holistic practice management where all options are explored to ensure the DHH patient feels safe, secure, and engaged.
If this particular practice environment is refocused to accommodate most every marginalized or socially excluded individual’s need, then the patient begins to build, psychologically, a stronger, authentic sense of belonging. Feeling encouraged and accepted, they interact in the fullest sense as an integral member of the practice environment.
There are no barriers, no tension, and no disconnects when a patient feels like they belong. They are more vulnerable in sharing their life and health struggles. Doctors, in turn, are more engaged in diagnosing and treating the root cause of their medical problems.
ED study highlights common challenges experienced by DHH ASL users
A research study paper, https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/10497323211046238, published Nov. 25, 2021, revealed Deaf people who use ASL are more likely to use the emergency department (ED) than their hearing English-speaking counterparts and are also at higher risk of receiving inaccessible communication.
The team of co-authors found that:
Requesting communication access can be stressful, frustrating, and time-consuming for Deaf patients
Video remote interpreting impeded effective patient-provider communication
Written and oral communication provided insufficient information to Deaf patients
ED staff and providers lacked cultural sensitivity and awareness toward Deaf patients
In short, the study calls out reasons why DHH people often feel frustrated visiting the ED or their local provider. Because of the constant lack of information and understanding of their needs, these patients are unable to retain an authentic connection even when seeing the same doctor regularly. Trust issues are common.
My story as a Deaf parent
Many years ago, my son, who is Deaf, was admitted for surgery and accompanied by my wife, who is also Deaf, and me. Sitting in the hospital’s preoperative room, we spoke with his physician through an ASL interpreter, whom we found out later was not certified. But we understood the interpreter had been made accessible and thought, “That's okay, at least they provided someone,” even as we noticed during the interpretation that their skillset was sorely lacking.
The doctor asked if my son had allergies to which I provided names of medications causing allergic reactions. The interpreter translated our identification of the drug allergies for the printing of a wrist armband. Instinctively, I felt something was wrong during the voiced interpretation. Just prior to he being wheeled in for surgery, I checked my son’s wristband and discovered a life-threatening medical error. I clarified the right medication by writing it down on paper. The doctor corrected the wristband printing, and my son had his surgery and recovered.
This experience is a parent’s worst nightmare. I still distinctly remember the doctor’s vibe ─ he simply wasn't fully engaged. He spoke to us as if our communication exchange was an obligation and underestimated our intellect. The problem causing this disconnect was our hearing loss, his perception of what that meant, and lack of effective communication.
Tips to help healthcare providers do better in sensitive situations
To be clear, authentic human connection does not represent one marginalized community. It applies to all individuals in the healthcare space to assure a sense of belonging and well-being. Our dedicated providers and the offices they work in must create the conditions for their patients to feel seen, known and understood.
Get ahead of being inclusive. In addition to being reactive when alerted of the need to provide accommodations for the patient, be proactive and accessible prior to the visit. Many doctors arrange in advance for interpreters to be present for patients who use ASL. In some cases, the interpreters are not always qualified. The provider can take the extra step individualizing the care of their patient by learning cultural etiquette and inquiring about any specific individual needs, such as communication, preferred accommodations and more.
Reframe how you perceive patients with disabilities and other challenges. I’ve always informed the physician upfront that the value of an ASL interpreter present is not for me but for he or she who is a hearing person. If healthcare professionals do not sign, they do not use ASL; therefore, a communication barrier exists between the patient and doctor. The interpreter is present for both of us.
Moreover, this situation is not entirely about a Deaf person requiring the accommodation. It’s also about how the DHH community is unintentionally and unfairly placed in the light of underestimation, judgement and treatment unequal to the hearing person. A continuous look of surprise prevails upon finding out that I, as a “Deaf patient,” have a master’s degree, executive-level employment, and other credentials. The surprise exists because of the hearing individual’s inaccurate perception of what a Deaf person is able to achieve in this world. The answer and preconception should be: anything that person so desires.

AI-enabled technologies are poised to play an important role in the empowerment of Deaf and hard-of-hearing people, allowing those who rely on sign language to communicate effectively and connect with non-signers and vice versa. Computer sensing technologies and AI algorithms are paving the way for new applications that address the issues that can arise when users of different language modalities attempt to interact.
“Since the Deaf community is incredibly diverse, there is ‘no one-size-fits-all’ approach. Every Deaf person’s communication needs and preferences are based on their own environment and the purpose of the interaction,” said Lori Miller, Senior Vice President at Avodah. “We’re excited for the Council to inform these distinct needs to enhance our modern AI sign-language recognition solutions.”

AvodahMed’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Focuses on Primary Care in 2022
Dec 21, 2021
Healthcare providers are invited to participate in an exclusive pilot program.
DALLAS, Texas—December 21, 2021—With the arrival of 2022 imminent, Avodah, a transformative SaaS company powering artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, and its healthcare division AvodahMed are using new capital to extend its digital health services to primary care. AvodahMed’s human-centered AI design integrated in clinical and practice workflows assures a digitally high human touch that preserves the trusted patient-provider relationship across the continuum of care.
AvodahMed’s solution is the next digital frontier in primary care medicine, positioning physicians to better address higher acuity needs in an already capacity-strained healthcare system. As concerns mount over the newly identified COVID-19 variants, digital health solutions are fast becoming a permanent and prominent fixture in care delivery. Medical groups and clinics nationwide are reimagining the in-person visit incited by the pandemic crisis and increasing consumer demand for nonurgent, easy-to-access and convenient virtual health options.
“Primary care has a frontline role in healthcare,” said Shawn Ring, Avodah’s Founder and CEO. “When the intersection of digital health and technology align with the human connection, we have the opportunity to address patients holistically such as social determinants of health, for example, which in turn fuels better care management and outcomes.”
Avodah’s development plans follow last month’s announcement closing $7 million in the seed round.
For the patient, AvodahMed HIPAA-compliant pilot program’s digital care solutions currently enable secure access and bidirectional communication with practice staff and the patient at any time and location; moreover, patients are encouraged to invite family members and loved ones to e-visits. Also, AvodahMed offers a remote patient monitoring (RPM) solution that improves care for at-home patients managing chronic care conditions or discharged from a hospital requiring a longer healing period.
For the healthcare provider, the pilot program offers front- and back-office digital services that include: a scheduling platform for patients to arrange check-in, visit and post-visit appointments; video consults; vitals checking; data analytics; physician notes transcription; and more. These services integrate into the practice or clinic’s workflow, daily operations and any vendor-agnostic electronic health record system.
AvodahMed’s expansion of its pilot program will build upon AI capabilities in global language translation and the collection and analysis of health data insights to help inform clinical decision-making and communication with the patient.
A forthcoming AvodahMed service is its proprietary sign language translation and transcription available in visual, text or oral. This life-changing virtual health communication dramatically improves deaf patients’ accessibility to healthcare and engagement. AvodahMed captures the nuances of facial and body gestures in an effective, distinct and simplified digitized manner that strengthens the deaf patient’s online interaction with a provider.
“We’re deeply committed to innovating AI solutions that overcome health inequities encountered by deaf individuals in our current healthcare environment,” remarked Ring. “Language and communication barriers are largely responsible for poor patient-provider communication.”
Physicians and practice administrators interested in participating in AvodahMed’s pilot program can email inquiries to info@avodah.com.

“We’re excited to partner with our investors as we accelerate our growth strategy to improve the lives of patients and their healthcare providers,” said Shawn Ring, Chief Executive Officer, Avodah. “This successful financing round, which was oversubscribed twice, demonstrates the confidence we have achieved from our customers and investors. “As a testament to AvodahMed’s early-stage innovative solutions, MedTech Innovator, the largest accelerator of medical devices worldwide, named AvodahMed to its annual list of 2021 Top 50 startups to participate in the award-winning Accelerator program,” he added.

Deregulation Creates Opportunities
Nov 3, 2020
AvodahMed catalyzes the evolution of the healthcare experience
DALLAS, TX. November 2020–AvodahMed, a paradigm in Telehealth, has patented artificial intelligence technology that provides a unique solution of real time vital checking, video conferencing, patient data analytics and language services embedded with AI. Today they announced that its growing technology package brings the patient and doctor closer together bringing real time patient data for better care.
Shawn Ring, President and CEO of AvodahMed, said “Deregulation opens virtual doors for patients to have medical services at home. Through our novel patented technology, AvodahMed can provide quality care to patients remotely, whether in rural areas or at home, by allowing patients and doctors to track patient vitals from home, gain access to unique insights and communicate directly with patients in their language through video conferencing.”
Mr Ring continued “The Executive Order signed on August 3, 2020, improves rural health and Telehealth access. Section (v) of the order states that Telehealth services will be required beyond the Public Health Emergency (PHE). COVID-19 will come and go, but Telehealth services are here to stay. Additionally, deregulation has opened up a new market; what was once considered effective care is no longer sufficient. People are demanding more and better healthcare at home, and new technologies will be needed to make this happen. AvodahMed is catalyzing the evolution of the healthcare experience through our Telehealth solutions.”

COVID-19 Changed Telehealth
Aug 4, 2020
August 4, 2020 brought Permanence to a projected $250Billion Telehealth Market
DALLAS, TX. November 2020–AvodahMed, a paradigm in Telehealth, has patented artificial intelligence technology that provides a unique solution of real time vital checking, video conferencing, patient data analytics and language services embedded with AI. Today they announced that the company is uniquely positioned to take advantage of the current market demand.
Shawn Ring, President and CEO of AvodahMed said: “Post-pandemic, the world was faced with a new set of challenges when providing healthcare for people. Due to the influx of patients with COVID-19, who needed immediate care, hospitals and urgent cares became less accessible. These, and several more challenges led to Telehealth deregulation. What was first temporarily passed on March 20th, 2020, is now permanent through an Executive Order released on August 3rd, 2020.”
Projected 50X growth of Telehealth market
Ring continued: “Now the question is, how does this affect the Telehealth market? McKinsey and Company reports a projected staggering growth to $250B, which is 50X 2019 actuals, due to both the deregulation and the pandemic impact. Traditional healthcare providers recognize, and are looking for, solutions to meet the new remote healthcare demand. Telehealth is now a patient-driven market. Doctors and lawmakers are following suit and AvodahMed is right in the middle of that demand curve.”

Through this partnership, an Ambient Screening solution is embedded within Pulse4Pulse's diagnostic offering, delivering an automated, intelligent solution for early disease detection and provider efficiency. This innovative platform integrates seamlessly into routine patient visits, leveraging real-time AI insights to enhance preventative care, improve provider efficiency, and streamline diagnostic workflows.
Addressing the Growing Need for Early Detection According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) cause 74% of global deaths, with cardiovascular diseases leading at 19+ million annually. Early intervention is crucial, and the AI-driven preventative care market is projected to exceed $164 billion by 2030. Pulse4Pulse and AvodahMed's Ambient Screening solution empowers providers with market leading tools for faster, more accurate disease detection and improved patient outcomes.
How It Works – AI-Powered Screening in Action The AI-powered screening solution passively listens to patient-provider interactions during routine exams, identifying hidden risk factors for chronic diseases in real time.

The future of AI in healthcare
The future of AI in healthcare is broad, with endless possibilities. From diagnoses, to administrative tasks, to enhancing patient experiences, there are numerous ways medical professionals can benefit from AI. Investors are taking advantage of this opportunity by directing more resources into AI, seeing that it helps improve patient outcomes and enhances medical practice for physicians.
Many medical providers are wondering how AI will change healthcare in the future. For now, we can boldly state that AI has revolutionized healthcare, from administrative workflow to patient diagnoses and ancillary service notifications. And this is only the beginning.
Researchers are constantly developing new ways to improve the medical health system. As a physician, it is advisable to keep up with the trends and adopt AI into your practice. From a process and financial standpoint, AI is changing the landscape, exposing areas that need more attention and alleviating burnout and stress.
Beyond this, AI will improve how medical professionals interact with EHRs and enhance communication between patients and doctors. The ultimate goal of AI is to enhance patient outcomes and make the medical system better for patients and providers.

Improve health for your patients, your practice, and you
AvodahMed provides solutions that help you enhance patient care, drive revenue, reduce costs, and improve efficiency.
We’re taking new and emerging technology to the next level by using natural language processing (NLP), natural language assessment (NLA), and natural language generation (NLG). Our solutions learn you, revealing hidden revenue opportunities through ancillary alerts.
With real-time language translation, including American Sign Language (ASL), plus conversational and deep-learning AI, we tailor our auto transcription solutions to the unique needs of your practice. Our technologies promote accessibility and equitable communications.

Jun 21, 2021
Dallas, TX–June 1, 2021—AvodahMed hires Jennifer Storey as Sign Language Program Lead.
Jennifer Storey comes to AvodahMed with extensive experience interacting with the Deaf Community. She is bilingual in ASL and English and is skilled in the fields of education and research. Storey, who has been profoundly deaf since the age of 18 months, knows firsthand the significant communication barriers that deaf and hard-of-hearing people can encounter, especially when seeking medical assistance. Before joining AvodahMed, Storey worked as a Deaf educator and ASL instructor, and also currently serves as a consultant for Fuller Theological Seminary and Biblica, developing an online Bible translation training course for Deaf translators. Her recent work is an asset as she guides AvodahMed in its development of an American Sign Language (ASL) medical database to enable healthcare providers to communicate directly with ASL users.
After understanding our use of Artificial Intelligence for ASL recognition technology, Storey commented,“Consider me a converted skeptic. When I was introduced to AvodahMed and the technology, my first reaction was ‘No way is this possible!’ But now that I have seen firsthand what AvodahMed is developing, its capabilities and impact, I am amazed at the cutting-edge technology. It will truly be awesome and life-changing.”
